Simple Wholesome Dinners


I have learnt that dinner doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. It can be very simple!

The trick is to keep it to real food as much as you can. What is 'real' food? Bread, meat, eggs, vegetables, fruit, dairy products ... Avoiding manufactured in a factory goods as much as you can. Especially those manufactured goods that mention ingredients that are preservatives, emulsifiers, etc.

No one needs a lot of meat, nor heaps of vegetables. The key to keeping it simple, and cheap, is to base your meal around a wholesome starch (such as brown rice, wholemeal pasta, potatoes, wholegrain bread...), and include some vegetables and a small amount of meat. It's the starch that fills you up. (Just look at the Japanese with their rice, and the Irish with their potatoes!)

Dinner can be as simple as:

  • A sandwich or roll, with lettuce, tomato, capsicum, egg slices, a slice of ham (or other meat), ...

  • An omelette (I often put frozen vegetables in my omelettes, and cheese), with a salad on the side (if wished). If you are very hungry you could add a cooked potato or two, or some mashed potatoes.

  • Homemade soup with a toasted sandwich or two on the side.

  • Baked beans on toast, with some tomato wedges on the side.

  • Sausages, with potatoes and frozen vegetables, with a gravy.

  • Quesadillas (tortillas with cheese, slice of meat and some tomato & capsicum, fried).

  • Toasted sandwiches (eg. cooked mince, mashed potatoes, vegetables, baked beans, spaghetti, cheese, any cooked meat or legume, any sauce or relish, ...)

  • Any cooked meat with salad or cooked vegetables on the side, with a gravy or sauce if wished.

  • A vegetarian or meat casserole or stew, served over rice, pasta, or potatoes.

  • A homemade burger, served with lettuce, tomato, and any sauce or relish you fancy. This can be a burger made with mince (with any flavorings you want to throw into it), or a tasty vegetarian burger.

I'll probably think of some more ideas after I publish this! But, anyway, you can see how simple and easy and uncomplicated a simple wholesome dinner can be.
